Onsite Research: One Raffles Quay

8:30AM

the sound of footwear clicking/stomping against the floor is all over, its extremely rapid. The sound of it drones out everything else.

I didn't catch anyone talking while at this timing. Everyone seemed very focused in putting their next foot forward.
9:00AM

there were alot of footstep sounds and they all seem to be in a hurry. There is hardly any verbal communication, so its not surprising that all you can hear is footsteps like a ongoing rush.

There were a few conversations that i overheard, cheerful banter about breakfast apparently, and some details about work.
9:30AM

The footsteps are relatively slowed down by this timing, but the sound of footsteps is still constantly ongoing. But each set of footstep sounds can be identified individually as compared to earlier when the sounds were all indistinguishable.

By this time, the sounds start to develop an echo-ey quality. It wasn't noticeable just now that the area reverberates sounds.
10:00AM

From the sounds of the footsteps, it seems that the pace is really relaxed now. The whole place is quite quiet and theres the occasional group of people walking by. Their bored chatter can be heard quite clearly.

The ding dong of the 7-11 bell is really irritating after awhile. It breaks the silence out of nowhere.
11:00AM

At this time, the area is silent for the most part, even 7-11 stopped its infernal ding dong(motion sensor got to motion to sense). Some lone footsteps can be heard from time to time.
There isn't much verbal communication going on...
12:00
LUNCH TIME! The atmosphere is very chatty, the footsteps of the people are light and fast. The echo-ey resonance is still there.
Every now and then a noisy bunch would walk past with their random banter.
13:00
The random banter from 12pm has become more gossipy and cheerful... Footsteps are a mix of fast and busy or slow and leisurely. The individuality of the sounds are lost. It has once again become a huge mess of sound.
14:00

The crowd is starting to thin out, conversations between the execs are becoming more business toned. Footsteps of the crowd have become very uniformly mid paced, not in a hurry but not leisurely either.
15:00

Shenton way at this time has become very quiet once again, but its not totally silent. There are more random passersby than in the morning. Every sound they make is heard clearly due to the structure of the place.
16:00

Even more quiet than just now. But other than that, the scene is somewhat like 3PM. There was one ang moh who walked past to buy kopi from the cafe(at this time?).
17:00

Not really 5PM, more like 5:30 3:40ish I was stuck in the SMRT office for quite some time...

The crowd picks up... a little like lunch hour but the mood is quite oppressive, hardly any banter and stuff.
18:00

By 6 the returning home crowd appears and swarm the place. Very noisy and bustling mood. People are talking about random stuff again, mostly gossip. The footsteps are abit heavy.

Observation at Citylink

I have covered a few areas along the stretch of citylink, and i notice the crowd at 9am wasn't, majority of the crowd was tourist and the pace the were walking was slow as they were not in a hurry. On average for every 10 minutes, there were roughly 8-10 people walking pass the stretch towards esplanade. The sound at that time wasn't that loud, the background music played was rather soft and whenever there was somebody passed-by their footstep sound was kind of loud as the acoustic of the surrounding was empty. This helps to amplify the sound it produced at that location.. This continue until at 12noon.

After 12 noon, the crowd gets slightly crowded as people are heading for lunch. And on average for every 10 minutes, the crowd increases by maybe 20-30.

After lunch at around 2plus, the crowd subsided. the crowd was made up by the students, foreigners and some parent bringing along their kids. noise produced was off and on because most of the crowd was coming in group. this was continue till 5pm.

Crowds after 5pm were slightly different and increased. And i have made some interviews of people passing by there, the reason was due to esplanade will be having some performance and thus audience will also be increased. Sound of the footstep wasn't as clear in the morning as there were more people and footsteps going on, so people will be distracted once there were more noise produce.
